The Kingdom of Bahrain, meaning "two seas" in Arabic, covering an area of approximately 277 square miles is populated by the majority Shia and the minority Sunni ethnic groups. One of the first states in the Gulf Region to discover oil and to build a refinery, the Muslim country has been ruled by the Khalifa family since 1783. Educated in the UK and USA, Sheikh Hamad is a Sunni who has led the country since 1999, changing his title from Emir to King when Bahrain became a Kingdom in 2002. Bahrain is now a constitutional monarchy with an elected legislative assembly. Its capital Manama is the major city and port.

The majestic Al Fateh Grand Mosque, an important place which gives an insight into the culture and religion of the people, reflects several Middle Eastern styles of architecture. Crowned by one of the world’s largest fiberglass domes it can accommodate over 7000 worshipers.
